Mena Hweg 2013

£13.50
Trophy Winner for 'Best Off -Dry Wine' at the SWVA awards 2014

Alcohol: 7.5%

Grape variety: Schönburger

Tasting notes The wine is light green in the glass with delicate floral, citrus and peach aromas. Although the wine carries a residual sugar of 38g/l, it is well balanced by the grapes natural acidity, giving tension and vibrancy yet finishing clean and crisp.

Food pairing: Although these styles are often misunderstood, they are wonderfully versatile; not sweet enough for a dessert wine, it can be enjoyed as an aperitif, a mid meal palate cleanser, or with a range of foods including Asian, salad dishes and especially savoury dishes that carry fruity or sweet elements. Our house favourite is a platter of Helford Blue cheese, digestive biscuits and a glass of Mena.

Winemaker’s notes This wine is inspired by the great wines of Germany, particularly the Mosel’s Kabinett and Spätlese styles. Because of the wines low alcohol and due to the sometimes peculiar Protected Designation of Origin rules of the UK and EU, we are unable to refer to the grape type on the label. Therefore, we have derived our name from the Cornish translation for the Schönburger grape, which means ‘pretty/sweet hill’; mena meaning hill, hweg meaning nice/sweet.

Harvested by hand on 15th October 2013, the grapes were whole bunch pressed and the juice fermented naturally in stainless steel. Fermentation was arrested after approximately two thirds of the sugars had fermented to alcohol to leave a wine with a residual sugar of 38g/ per litre. The wine was bottled early to maintain freshness and vibrancy.
